Short-term parking

IND’s five-floor, 2,000-space Terminal Garage facility offers a wealth of short-term options, including a pick-up and drop-off area, electric car charging facilities and priority parking bays that can range from half-hourly to daily rates.

Given that it is connected to the terminal building by a fully covered and temperature-controlled moving walkway, the Terminal Garage allows passengers to get from their car to their gate in minutes, which is particularly useful if you’re flying on business.

The Terminal Garage is a multi-story facility with a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) in operation throughout, so it’s a good idea to double-check the height of your vehicle before setting off.

Park and Walk

IND’s open-air Park and Walk facility is ideal for passengers who want to enjoy the convenience of parking close to the terminal while also saving a bit of spending money for the trip ahead. Developed as part of Indianapolis Airport’s research into efficiency and sustainability, the Park and Walk lot is just an eight-minute walk from the terminal along well-lit and signed paths. To further increase affordability, this lot does not have a shuttle service, so it is perhaps best-suited to those who are away for a few days and traveling light, whether that’s in terms of luggage, budget or both.

Long-term parking

IND’s most affordable option and an ideal choice for those traveling with family or heavy bags is the 8,000-capacity Economy Lot, where a fleet of complimentary shuttle buses make the 10-minute trip between the lot and the terminal entrance every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day.

As part of the security features of parking in the Economy Lot at IND, your car is assigned a barcode upon entry that, when scanned upon your return, will quickly and accurately locate your vehicle so you don’t have to worry about forgetting where you left it.

Valet parking

One whole floor of the Terminal Garage is reserved for IND’s valet parking, which, above having staff park for you, includes car wash, polishing and detailing services, as well as help with your luggage and the option to have your car ready and waiting for you when you return.

Cell Phone Lot

If you’ve arrived early to pick someone up, Indianapolis Airport’s Cell Phone Lot provides completely free parking while you wait to hear from your passengers. Once they’ve told you they’re ready to go, it's just a five-minute drive to the terminal to collect them.

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the largest airport in the state of Indiana, with visitor numbers of around nine million per year. The airport’s three runways and 46 gates cater to over a dozen airlines offering more than 140 daily flights to and from 46 non-stop international and domestic destinations.

The airport’s 1.2 million-square foot (111,480-square meter), $1.1 billion state-of-the-art terminal building was the first American airport facility to be designed and built in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Location of Indianapolis Airport

IND is situated seven miles (11.3 kilometers) south west of downtown Indianapolis at exit 68 on I-70 and is easily reachable via the I-465 beltway that encircles the entire city and connects it to major Interstate highways like I-70, I-65, I-69 and I-74.

Half-hourly buses and pre-booked express coaches run to IND from downtown Indianapolis and the surrounding region and, although the airport doesn’t yet have its own dedicated rail station, Indianapolis Central Train Station is only 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) east of IND, which is a quick and convenient taxi ride away.

History of Indianapolis Airport

First established in 1931, Indianapolis International Airport was renamed the Weir Cook Municipal Airport in 1944 after Indiana’s own Colonel Harvey Weir Cook, a heroic World War I flying ace who lost his life during World War II.

The following three decades saw the airport grow rapidly in size and popularity until 1976, when the decision was made to change its name once again to Indianapolis International Airport in order to better reflect the facility’s reputation as a global transport hub.

IND’s original domestic and international terminal buildings were expanded and redeveloped numerous times over the subsequent 40 years until they were replaced with a consolidated terminal facility in 2008. Boasting progressive design features and built to accommodate huge numbers of passengers, the record-breaking $1.1 billion terminal was named the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal in honor of the pilot and in celebration of more than 75 years of flights in Indianapolis.

Take pole position

Having hosted the world-famous Indianapolis 500 for over a century, the city is regarded by many as the home of American motor racing.

The museum itself is made completely from Indiana-sourced materials and features 92 unique, integrated icons that each represent one of Indiana’s 92 counties. Whether you’re new to the state, a regular visitor or even a local, at an easy 25-minute drive from the airport, the Indiana State Museum is handily placed to teach you something new before you fly.

See a presidential palace

Step back in time as you walk through the grand front door of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, a faithful restoration of the home built and inhabited by the 23rd President of the United States.

Stand on the very same porch from which Harrison delivered the famous ‘Front-Porch Campaign’ that won him the 1888 Presidential election or explore his 16-room red-brick house, painstakingly redecorated in the Victorian style that was typical during Harrison's lifetime. It’s adorned with over 3,700 artefacts from the era, the majority of which actually belonged to Harrison and his family.

An early advocate for equal rights for all Americans, Harrison is often overshadowed by some of his presidential peers, but to his fellow Indianans, he’s a Hoosier hero.

Enjoy art of the Americas

Along with paintings and sculptures from some of Western America’s most important artists, The Eiteljorg Museum is home to one of the most extensive collections of Native contemporary art in the world.

In a unique, engaging and often surprising series of galleries, visitors can find iconic works by Andy Warhol, Georgian O’Keeffe and Kay WalkingStick paired with new images and artefacts inspired by the tribal practices and traditions of the indigenous peoples of America.

The Eiteljorg, only 20 minutes from the airport, is one of very few museums that allows visitors to explore the fusion of America’s long cultural history and its creative present.

Enjoy park life

Designed and constructed in 1916 by renowned landscape architect, George Kessler, the Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Gardens feature hundreds of different exotic species from around the world that keep its aluminum conservatory building - the first of its kind in the USA - warm throughout the year.

Whether you want to stretch your legs before flying or the kids could do with burning off some energy, Garfield Park is 10,000 square feet (929 square meters) of flowers, fountains and fresh air.

Witness a postmodernist master

The life and works of writer, artist and critic, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr, who is yet another famous Hoosier, are preserved and explored at Indianapolis’ Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.

Dedicated to championing the late author’s groundbreaking literary and cultural contributions, the library houses a museum, art gallery and reading room. A complete replica of his writing studio, the museum's broad collection includes Vonnegut's Purple Heart medal for service in World War II, his iconic Coronamatic typewriter and an unopened letter to the author from his father; a perfectly intriguing trio of artefacts to inspire budding authors and respected writers alike.

How to get to Indianapolis Airport

0

Bus

IndyGo, Indianapolis’ public transport system, provides the Route 8 bus service that runs between IND and the city center on a half-hourly basis every day of the week from 6am until 11pm. The average journey time is around 30 minutes, but it is important to allow for potential traffic delays when planning your journey. You can find a detailed map and live schedule for the Route 8 service here.

Indianapolis Airport is also served by the Go Green Downtown/Airport Express shuttle, which runs between the city and the airport every 30 minutes from 5am to 11pm. The Go Green shuttle is significantly quicker than the Route 8 service, reaching the airport in around 15 minutes, but it is highly recommended that you pre-book a space as priority is given to online reservations and you may be forced to wait for the next available shuttle. Although the airport doesn’t yet have its own rail facilities, the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal has been designed to accommodate a Light Rail Transit station in the future, which would allow users to travel between IND and the city center in minutes.

Useful tips

Check your vehicle’s height

IND’s multi-story Terminal Garage has a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) in operation throughout, so it’s a good idea to check the height of your vehicle before setting off. If you are over the allocated height or you’re at all unsure, the Park and Walk and long-term facilities are both open-air and only a few minutes away.

Where to go for drop-offs and pick-ups

Indianapolis Airport provides free pick-up and drop-off bays right outside the terminal building, but drivers are asked to spend no longer than 60 seconds in them and should under no circumstances leave their vehicles unattended.

If you’d like to spend a bit more time wishing your passengers a good trip or if you arrived to pick someone up earlier than planned, IND’s Cell Phone Lot is completely free to use and only a five-minute drive to the terminal when your passenger is ready.

Ask for help from the Airport Ambassadors

Whether you’re in need of directions, want to double-check you’ve got the right gate or you want to know where is good to eat in the airport or downtown, IND’s team of voluntary Airport Ambassadors is there to help you and show off some of the famous ‘Hoosier Hospitality’.

Free car assistance from a service team

If you’ve come back from your trip and forgotten where you’ve parked the car or found it with a flat tire or battery, IND’s vehicle service team is on hand to provide around-the-clock assistance and get you back on the road. Just call them on (+1) 317-487-5017 and they’ll be with you as soon as possible.
