Jacksonville Airport parking

JAX offers on-site parking at several garages and lots arranged around the airport property with short-term, long-term and valet options available. As a complimentary service to all travelers, the airport provides flat battery assistance, flat tire inflation and help locating your car if you can't find it.

Jacksonville Airport Parking Cost

Dropping off and picking up

There are drop-off and pick-up points immediately outside the terminals, but cars cannot be parked or left here. If you want to see people off at departures, you'll need to park in the hourly garage right next to the main terminal area.

If you're picking people up from arrivals and aren't sure when they'll have been through baggage reclaim, you can wait in the free cell phone lot until they call from outside arrivals.

Daily parking

The daily garage can be used to park your own car if you're only going on a short weekend or business trip. The uncovered lot is convenient for terminal access, since it’s within walking distance of the entrance.

Economy parking

Two economy lots are also located on-site, but they are a little further from the terminal areas. Free 24-hour shuttle buses are provided to make this the most cost-effective parking option at the airport.

Valet parking

It’s possible to leave your car in a specific valet area just outside the terminal to have staff park it for you, so you don’t have to carry keys around on your trip. They’ll also have it waiting for you at your return terminal when you get back.

Premier Parking

Premier Parking is a pre-paid scheme for regular travelers. You pay a set fee in advance for a number of benefits, including a guaranteed space at a special Premier-only lot next to the terminal, a preferred TSA lane and full rights to share your account with friends, family and colleagues.

Frequent Parker Program

The Frequent Parker Program is similarly designed for regular fliers, but works with a special JAXPassport that gets logged when you arrive and leave to automatically charge parking fees to your credit card. It's a useful time-saver if you're in a hurry and it has the bonus of a points system that gives you free days of parking at certain milestones of use.

Off-site airport parking lots

You can find several off-site parking options at Jacksonville International Airport, too. Lots based a short distance from the airport property connect to the terminals with complimentary shuttle buses to provide a ‘park and ride’ service for passengers. It adds some travel time to your journey, but it can save you money.

Many of these lots will also provide a valet parking service, whereby the staff will meet you at your terminal, park for you and, similarly to the on-site parking option, bring it back to your terminal upon your return.

Guide to Jacksonville Airport

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is a joint civil and military airport located a short distance from Jacksonville, Florida. Transporting around six million passengers every year, Jacksonville is a comparatively small airport with a single terminal, two runways and a small Air National Guard base on the edge of the property.

Only eight airlines currently offer services and they are mostly the major and economy carriers in North America. Routes cover most of the major cities in the eastern USA and one international destination in Toronto via Air Canada. The most popular destinations from the airport include Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Charlotte Douglas Airport (CLT) and John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York.

Although there are several larger airports in Florida, Jacksonville's location at the edge of the state, close to Georgia, fills a large geographical gap between Orlando and Atlanta. It provides convenient air travel for the people of Jacksonville as well as nearby towns and cities including Brunswick, Gainesville, Lake City, Ocala, Daytona Beach, Waycross and even Tallahassee and Savannah.

Location of Jacksonville Airport

The airport is about 13 miles (20.9 kilometers) north of the center of Jacksonville, right on the edge of the city close to where the I-95 and I-295 intersect. The interstates are the only options to reach JAX by road wherever you travel from and there are no rail connections without a transfer in the city center.

The only direct public transport available is the Route 1 North Main bus service from Rosa Parks Station in central Jacksonville, which is provided by Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). National rail and bus services connect to the airport via the JTA bus network at Jacksonville Central Station.

There are no trains directly to the airport or no useful connection points between Jacksonville Central Station and the airport. If you need to take a train elsewhere in Florida or are coming into the area via Amtrak, Central Station is the one you’ll want. From there, you can get buses, taxis and rental cars to take you to JAX Airport.

History of Jacksonville Airport

Jacksonville Airport was established by the military in 1965 to replace Imeson Field and facilitate travel between naval bases. The old airport had no extra space for development, so a modern and unique facility was brought to the area.

The original design was such that the arrivals and departures spaces were located on the same level at different ends of the airport, but ever-increasing demand forced a rethink to optimize the space and new levels were introduced.

Progress was slow as the airport grew to just two million passengers over the next 20 years, but civil and military roles continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s. As an Air National Guard base, military operations were focused on the opposite side of the runways to the main terminal, whilst the main airport focused on commercial air transport.

By 2000, annual passenger numbers had climbed to five million and a development plan was launched to rebuild much of the terminal building, improve concessions and expand the number of airport parking spaces.

Airport facilities

JAX Airport is considered small for an international airport, but manages to offer a good range of services, shopping and airport food and drink nonetheless. With only one small terminal, it's easy to get around the concessions before your flight.

The airport runs a volunteer ambassadors program, which can be found at information desks. They’re there to provide directions and advise you on available services and facilities. If you want to check anything in advance, you can call customer services on (+1) 904-741-4902.

Some hotels close to Jacksonville Airport allow you up to two weeks of free parking in their lot and provide you with a shuttle ride to and from your terminal, so long as you stay at the hotel for at least one night at the start or end of your trip.

These packages are helpful if you have an early departure or late arrival, but they usually must be booked in advance. However, most hotel policies allow for changes of plans and will accept cancelations.

Top things to do in Jacksonville Airport

Enjoy the airport art program

Art has been part of JAX for over 20 years and it continues to showcase work from professional fine artists living in the Jacksonville region today. Six gallery spaces exhibit the work and have featured over 500 artists in the last two decades, as well as the occasional special historical and cultural programs.

The permanent collection focuses on site-specific installations such as sculpture, murals and innovative window walls, whilst the temporary exhibitions tend to focus on paintings and photography. All of the fine art on display is also available for purchase to help support the artists in the region.

Relax with a spa and the Delta Sky Club

Dropping into an airport spa for a massage or beauty treatment is a unbeatable way to unwind from the stress of traveling. The Comfort Spa is found on Concourse A and provides a range of massages, manicures, pedicures, facials and other spa treatments that last for anything between 15 minutes and over an hour.

Once you're finished in the spa, the tranquility continues in the Delta Sky Club. Also found on Concourse A, the club offers day memberships that get you access to the club lounge, TV, complimentary drinks and snacks and personalized travel assistance if you need it.

Soak up some live jazz

Live music has become an almost permanent feature at Jacksonville International Airport, with musicians and bands hosted between 11am and 4pm every day in the Center Courtyard (close to the Haskell Art Gallery space).

High-quality jazz is a favorite amongst travelers and non-travelers alike. Several online reviewers have named the airport among the best places to see live music in Jacksonville, so if you have an early-afternoon flight, you’ll be lucky enough to catch a performance.

Give your pet their own vacation at Pet Paradise

This rapidly expanding chain found at several American airports has created holiday resorts for dogs and cats. It's nice if your pet enjoys flying and can travel with you, but if not, having a place for them to stay at the airport means you're separated for the least possible time.

Pet Paradise has highly trained staff and full veterinary support for looking after your pets. All animals get their own private suites; the dogs have a communal patio, play area and swimming pool, whilst cats have a much quieter space to hang out and sleep in.

You can even check in on the resort's live web-cam feeds, which run 24 hours a day via their website.

Refuel at the airport restaurants

Smaller sites like JAX can rarely match the huge international airports for Michelin-starred cuisine, but Jacksonville succeeds in delivering a range of high-end options.

At the more expensive end, Vino Volo offers wine tastings with cheese and charcuterie selections to snack on, whilst Sam Snead's provides a golf-themed tavern with delicious locally cured, oak-grilled meat dishes including Angus beef. Healthy options can be found at the Ciao Gourmet Market or Freshens Smoothies, whilst plenty of American comfort food and fast food is available from Sbarro, Shula Burger, Quiznos and Chili’s Grill and Bar, too.

Top things to do near Jacksonville Airport

Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

Dedicated to providing a home for exotic big cats from a range of backgrounds, this sanctuary is the place to go to learn about their way of life and conservation.

Some of the cats came from private owners who tried to keep them as pets, others came from failed zoos or federal confiscations, but one thing is for sure: all of them have a safe home at the sanctuary.

With tigers, lions, bobcats, leopards and cougars at the ranch, you can get a much closer view and more personalized tour experience than you'll find at a big zoo, plus special experiences like night-feeding tours. At just seven miles (11.2 kilometers) from the airport, the Catty Shack Ranch is on the opposite side of the I-95 from JAX Airport.

Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens

With more than 5,000 works of art from 2000BC to the modern day, historic furnishings and traditionally designed flower gardens, the Cummer Museum offers an inspiring collection of the highest quality.

Located 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) from Jacksonville International Airport, the free museum has a strong selection of European and American work including Meissen porcelain, Joseph Jeffers Dodge, Eugene Savage, Japanese prints and rare books. It is all exhibited alongside historic furniture inside and three decorative flower gardens dating as far back as 1903 and a sculpture garden outside.

Atlantic Beach

Located about 26 miles (41.8 kilometers) from JAX Airport, Atlantic Beach is part of a community of Jacksonville Beaches and is a popular place for locals as well as tourists. There are miles of sandy beaches and a large gathering of bars and restaurants around Atlantic Boulevard to provide sustenance for your day in the Floridian sun.

It’s kept meticulously clean and tidy, so the beach is ideal for family days out or couples’ walks on the coastline. It can get a little busy at weekends and during holiday seasons, but a short stroll up or down the beach will soon find you a quiet patch.

Riverside Arts Market

The Riverside Arts Market is only 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) away from JAX in the city of Jacksonville itself. As the name suggests, it sits immediately next to St Johns River under the shadow of the Fuller Warren Bridge, which is the perfect setting for the open-air market held there every Saturday.

It has a bohemian feel with local traders selling a huge range of food, crafts, collectibles and artwork. There is usually live music to be heard amongst the foodie-favorite restaurants dotted around the neighborhood of Five Points. With its shady riverfront location and endless options for food and drink, this is free-thinking Florida at its finest.

EverBank Field

Home to the National Football League’s (NFL's) Jacksonville Jaguars and the annual Florida-Georgia college football game, EverBank Field is about 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) from JAX Airport.

It hosts music festivals and national sports events thanks to its heavy investment into creating one of the best stadiums in the country. The largest HD LED displays in the world, wading pools for spectators, unique food and drink offerings, friendly staff and amazing views all combine to give visitors an unforgettable day out.

Little Talbot Island State Park

Covering the entire 2,500-acre (1,011-hectare) Big Talbot Island, the park includes forests, dunes and salt marshes populated by wildlife like otters, bobcats and migrating birds. It’s a wonderful place to walk, fish, swim, camp, canoe and surf; there's even a fully equipped campground hiring bicycles and canoes if you can’t take your own.

At only 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Jacksonville Airport, it presents one of best places to enjoy a spot of tranquility in northern Florida.

Museum of Science and History

Often referred to by its initials, MOSH, the Museum of Science and History is the most popular museum in Jacksonville. A regularly rotated primary exhibit is supported by three floors of permanent displays from the collection, including some interactive and hands-on exhibits. The building also houses a planetarium for all space geeks out there.

Located around 17 miles (27.3 kilometers) from JAX Airport, this is a comparatively small museum, but what it lacks in size is more than compensated by quality.

Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve

As an extensive 46,000-acre (18,615-hectare) stretch of wetlands, waterways and forestry, this is the perfect way to replace city surroundings with stunning natural beauty.

The Timucuan Preserve includes plenty of walking trails and striking viewpoints of the area, as well as historic buildings and memorials, such as the Kingsley Plantation from the 1700s and a recreation of Fort Caroline from the 1500s.

It’s about 24 miles (38.6 kilometers) from Jacksonville Airport and is maintained by caring and helpful rangers throughout the year – they’ll give you recommendations of what to see in the park if you ask them.

Which terminal?

Jacksonville has just one terminal divided into several primary areas; a central entrance space, two concourses (A and C) for the departure gates and an arrivals area with baggage reclaim and rental car companies.

It's quite easy to find your way around, but if you do get lost or have any general questions, look out for the volunteer airport ambassadors in the blue vests who should be able to help you. You can also find white courtesy phones throughout the airport to speak to customer services if you can't find anyone to help you.

The airlines currently offering public flights to and from Jacksonville Airport can be found on the Jacksonville Airport website.

Advance inquiries about facilities at Jacksonville International Airport or special access requests can be made to customer services by calling on (+1) 904-741-4902.

How to get to Jacksonville Airport

0

Car

The primary road for access to Jacksonville International Airport from almost anywhere in the country, is the I-95. Running all the way down the East Coast from Maine to Miami, the I-95 passes through the center of Jacksonville and close to JAX, which is just north of the city.

From further west, the I-75 from Atlanta and I-10 from Tallahassee are the best ways into Jacksonville. On approach, you’ll take the I-95 north to reach the airport, which is about 13 miles (20.9 kilometers) from the city center.

Once you're on the I-95, look out for exit 363 onto Airport Road, which leads directly to the JAX terminal buildings. There are plenty of parking options in and around the airport, but you can also utilize rental cars, taxis, limousines and shared-ride service throughout Jacksonville, its surrounding areas and other major cities.

Bus

Several hotels based close to Jacksonville International Airport provide a shuttle bus service for their customers, but the only bus connection with Jacksonville city is the Route 1 North Main service from Rosa Parks Station, which is provided by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA).

Buses run from early morning until evening with times varying through the day, but averaging out to around one bus every 20 minutes. The JTA network runs across the entire Jacksonville area and connects Rosa Parks Station to national rail and bus services from Amtrak and Greyhound at Jacksonville Central Station.

Train

There are no trains directly to the airport or nearby or no useful connection points between Jacksonville Central Station and the airport. You can catch buses or taxis from Central Station to the airport itself. It’s also possible to rent cars from there to help you get around.

Useful tips

Don't expect JFK or Atlanta

Jacksonville Airport is quite a small site and inevitably offers fewer amenities and concessions than the large international airports. You can still expect to find a modern, spacious and relatively quiet airport with all the essentials and some great brands to boot, but JAX is not JFK.

Everything is close together

Regular travelers at other airports may be used to factoring in lots of time to travel between terminals and gates. At Jacksonville International Airport, however, the single terminal is small and easy to navigate; even the rental car center is housed inside the terminal itself. Most regulars at JAX report quick journeys through the airport and efficient security lines.

Plan your journey to and from the airport carefully

It may be straightforward to get around the grounds of JAX, but getting to the city is a little more challenging. Buses are regular, but stop running relatively early and there is currently no complimentary shuttle bus service or airport express available to the public. The best way to get to and from JAX is by car on the day, but you can also make use of the airport hotels if you want to arrive the night before to be sure of catching your flight.
