Kahului Airport parking

Kahului Airport’s range of parking facilities includes options for occasional or one-time users and frequent fliers, as well as parking for drivers coming to the airport to pick up or drop off passengers. You can pay for parking at OGG with cash or by credit card, but bear in mind that the machines do not dispense change.

Short- and mid-term parking

The OGG Commuter Terminal and Heliport parking areas are available for both short- and mid-term use. Reservations are not possible and you must pay for your stay at the ticket machines before entering either parking lot.

You must display your ticket clearly in your windshield in order to avoid a fine. Your first 15 minutes of parking in these areas are free of charge, making the Commuter Terminal and Heliport parking areas ideal for dropping off passengers. After 15 minutes, you will incur charges at different rates up to six hours, with a maximum daily fee in place to prevent you from paying over the odds for extended stays.

Monthly parking

If you’re a frequent flier at Kahului Airport or if you need a one-off long-term parking deal, you could save money by paying for parking by the month. The fee is set and payable from the 22nd of each month.

Electric vehicle parking

Kahului Airport has a number of parking bays reserved exclusively for use by electric vehicles. If your vehicle has the correct license plates (confirming their electric status), it is exempt from parking charges at Kahului Airport.

Kahului Airport (OGG) is the largest airport on the island of Maui, the second-busiest flight hub in the state of Hawaii and the 51st-busiest in the USA. It handles more than three million passengers every year, with more than 10 airlines offering flights to and from locations in Hawaii, other American states and selected cities in Canada.

As OGG is a small, government-run airport, its staff members are also responsible for managing Hana and Kapalua-West Maui Airport, Lanai Airport on the island of Lanai and the Molokai and Kalaupapa Airports on the island of Molokai.

Location of Kahului Airport

OGG is located three miles (4.8 kilometers) to the east of Kahului on the island of Maui and its site covers 1,391 acres (563 hectares) of land. The airport sits very close to the land bridge connecting the West Maui Mountain Range and Haleakala (the East Maui volcano).

With links to the Honoapiilani Highway, Kuihelani Highway and Hana Highway, OGG is easy to reach by road and allows quick routes to a number of popular resorts in the area. Semi-regular public bus services and an airport shuttle service are also available from stops in and around the local area; the Upcountry and Haiku Islander routes stop at the airport.

History of Kahului Airport

Following the modernization of a former wartime US naval airbase at a cost of $150,000, Kahului Airport officially began inter-island passenger and cargo operations on June 24 1952.

Since its early days, OGG has seen a great deal of expansion. The airport’s current form began to take shape between 1998 and 2001, when the Hawaii State Legislature passed bills to allow the airport’s redevelopment. This saw the lengthening of runways, the construction of new access roads and the expansion of the terminal building.

A bill passed in 2007 (Act 213, SLH 2007) permitted the addition of an extra gate, a conference room, family bathrooms, extra parking spaces and a new terminal roof. Another bill (Act 158, SLH 2008) came into force a year later that facilitated various improvements of the airport’s infrastructure. These changes included the rebuilding of runways and the addition of parking spaces, as well as the modernization of the airport’s security systems.

While OGG started out as a small, inter-island facility, it now serves more than three million passengers every year.

Top things to do in Kahului Airport

Eat in a rock star’s restaurant

Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill is owned by Maui resident and ex-Van Halen lead singer, Sammy Hagar. You can head there to enjoy a mix of island favorites and classic American bites such as the Ahi Tuna Burger, Beach Salad, Cabo Wabo Ceviche and Crispy Pescado Mahi Mahi (a uniquely-Hawaiian take on fish and chips).

With its breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, you can come here at any time between 10am and 9:30pm to enjoy a warm welcome, a relaxing atmosphere and food fit for a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall-of-Famer. The singer donates much of the profits from his restaurants to children’s charities, too.

Find the perfect Hawaiian gifts and souvenirs

Kahului Trading Company is a souvenir shop offering a great selection of local snacks and drinks. Typical Hawaiian delicacies on offer include locally dried fruit, Mauna Loa chocolate and toffee-covered macadamias, as well as Maui tea and cookies that always prove to be a hit with visitors. The shop also sells a uniquely Hawaiian selection of t-shirts.

Whether you need to pick up any last-minute gifts and souvenirs or you want to kill time before your flight, visit the Kahului Trading Company on the second floor of OGG.

Buy fresh pineapple and travel accessories (in the same store)

Hawaii is famous for its pineapples, so wouldn’t it be great if you could bring some home as a gift for friends or family? Since you can’t take your own picked pineapples onto the plane with you due to agricultural concerns, OGG's very own Pineapple County store packs your fruit snugly in its own cardboard box so it’s fit for flight.

As well as fresh pineapples, you’ll find a range of trinkets, t-shirts and other casual summer wear, all of which feature designs that are exclusive to the Pineapple County brand.

Enjoy a tasty hot or cold beverage

There are two Starbucks coffee shops at OGG; while you may not find anything new here, sometimes those familiar flavors and aromas can be just what you need when you're traveling.

Much like any other Starbucks, these outlets offer you ways to relax with a refreshing cold drink or a livening hot coffee in a welcoming atmosphere.

Get online

While WiFi isn’t freely available throughout Kahului Airport, you will find workstations with internet access at a low cost per minute. These computers are located in the Hawaiian Airlines holding area, opposite the ice cream snack shop at Gate 9, next to the public telephones at Gate 15, at the Gate 21B holding area and at Gates 33 and 35.

Relax in comfort and style

If you fly regularly from Kahului Airport, becoming a member of the Hawaiian Airlines Premier Club helps make every stay in the terminal a comfortable one. As a member, you receive priority over other passengers at check-in and during the security and boarding procedures, as well as every time you wish to use the airport's phone lines. Inside the lounge, you receive free, unlimited Internet access, along with a wide choice of drinks and snacks.

Enjoy breathtaking views and powerful aromas from way above sea level

However, there’s nothing quite like the aerial views of the rich, green rainforests, cascading waterfalls, winding valleys, craters, cliffs and rugged mountains that you can see for yourself on a helicopter tour over Maui.

They might not be cheap, but helicopter tours offer you an experience you’ll value forever. There are many local operators offering these tours; Blue Hawaiian Helicopters has received the best online reviews to date.

Once a favorite royal resort, Kaanapali Beach is now one of the most popular stretches of coastline in Maui. Its glistening white sands stretch across three miles (4.8 kilometers) of coastline and the area offers plenty of places to surf, snorkel or sunbathe.

Every evening at sunset, the beach plays host to a diving ceremony on the cliffs of Black Rock. During the ritual, you see a diver lighting torches along the cliff. This whole event retells the story of King Kahekili, a royal renowned for his athletic prowess.

These tours are available for people of all ages, swimming abilities and skill levels, including those with disabilities, making them a fun and unforgettable experience for everyone.

Climb aboard the Tropical Express

You can visit the Maui Tropical Plantation to learn how pineapples and sugarcanes grow on the island. One of the most popular attractions at the plantation is the Tropical Express; you can climb aboard the tram for a tour of the plantation, in which you'll see a number of indigenous plants and fruit trees growing in their natural environment.

Family-friendly zip-line tours are also available. With zip-lines ranging from 300 feet (91.4 meters) to 900 feet (274.3 meters) in length, Maui Tropical Plantation offers the only available zip-line tour for the whole family to enjoy. In fact, it accommodates children as young as five years old.

The plantation is also home to a lovely restaurant, Mill House, which serves food taken directly from the farm on the property. The restaurant offers its famous Maui Chef's Table, a seven-course meal that the chef prepares right in front of you. Such a feast is the ideal way to follow a long walk or an adrenaline-filled day on the zip-line.

WiFi is available at different points throughout the airport

Guide and service dogs may be able to forgo some quarantine requirements under strict conditions.

Watch out for mosquitos

As an open-air airport in a warm climate, mosquito bites can be an issue. Before you fly into OGG, you may wish stock up on plane-friendly bottles of bug repellent to stop insects making a meal of you.

You can only light up in the parking lot

Smoking is prohibited everywhere inside the OGG terminal building and most outdoor areas on-site. The only place you’re allowed to smoke is in the parking lot.
