Palm Beach Airport parking

Whether you’re taking a quick trip across the country or starting a round-the-world adventure, Palm Beach Airport has a range of on-site parking facilities designed to accommodate you and your vehicle. It does not currently operate a pre-booking system in its parking lots, but with almost 10,000 spaces across four different facilities, there is plenty of room.

Premium parking

As close to the terminal as it’s possible to park, PBI’s Premium facility is ideal if you’re traveling on business with schedules to keep or if you want to start your trip in style. Located right outside the terminal entrance, you can park in Premium, check in and be at your gate in just a few minutes.

Short-term parking

Ideal if you’re only away for a few days or if you’re traveling with your family and all your bags, Palm Beach Airport’s four-story short-term parking facility is situated next to the terminal building and only a two-minute walk to check-in. As a multi-story facility, PBI’s short-term parking lot operates a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters), so it’s a good idea to confirm the height of your vehicle before setting off.

Long-term parking

If you’re away for a week or more or looking to save some money, the 5,500-capacity long-term parking lot at Palm Beach Airport is ideal. Although further away, long-term parking is only a five-minute walk from the terminal and typically more affordable than the airport’s short-term and premium parking facilities. It’s important to note that most of the long-term parking area at PBI is housed in a multi-story facility and, while there is an open-air surface lot, there is no guarantee that a space will be available if your vehicle is over the specified height above.

Economy parking

Palm Beach Airport’s most affordable on-site parking option is its open-air economy facility, which offers 3,000 spaces within an eight-minute walk of the terminal building – also accessible via a four-minute ride on the complimentary shuttle that runs every 15 minutes. If you’re traveling on a budget, PBI’s economy lot is a great way to keep your car safe while you travel and it costs significantly less than the airport’s other parking options.

Cell phone lot

If you’re picking up passengers from the airport and you’ve arrived early, PBI operates a completely free parking lot in which you can wait. Parking in the terminal forecourt is strictly prohibited, so rather than driving aimlessly around the airport, park up in the cell phone lot until you hear from your passengers. It’s only a five-minute drive to the terminal where they’ll be ready and waiting for you.

As a rapidly growing east coast gateway, Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) welcomes over six million passengers a year. Its award-winning terminal building and three runways handle over 150 daily non-stop flights to numerous destinations throughout the USA and Canada, as well as quick and convenient access to the Bahamas.

Location of Palm Beach Airport

Only three miles (4.8 kilometers) west of Florida’s iconic Palm Beach, PBI provides domestic and international flights for residents of Greater Miami. It is directly accessible via Congress Avenue and the Florida Turnpike if you’re headed to PBI from the surrounding region and at Exit 69 of I-95 if you’re driving to the airport from further afield.

Palm Tran, Palm Beach’s public transport provider, runs a half-hourly bus service between downtown Palm Beach and PBI, seven days a week. Taking approximately 25 minutes, the route also includes a stop at West Palm Beach Intermodal Transit Center, which serves as a hub for the region’s Tri-Rail, Amtrak and Greyhound transport services.

History of Palm Beach Airport

PBI began operations as Morrison Field in 1936, named after Floridian Miss Grace K. Morrison, who was instrumental in its planning and organization. US Army Air Forces commissioned the airfield during World War II and, in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Morrison Field was used as the staging base for the Allied invasion of France with aircraft departing from Morrison to the United Kingdom to take part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

After the war, Palm Beach County fought to regain full control of the airfield from the US Air Force. In 1962, the last military presence was removed and the airfield was officially renamed Palm Beach International Airport.

Over time, the runways were upgraded and new terminal facilities were opened. The 550,000-square foot (51,097-square meter) David McCampbell Terminal, named after the World War II flying ace, Medal of Honor recipient and Palm Beach resident, was designed and installed in 1988. The terminal features innovative rapid expansion capabilities, so it can easily be doubled in size in the future as PBI continues to grow in popularity and cement its reputation as one of America’s best medium-sized airports.

The airport features a number of familiar fast food outlets alongside some Palm Beach family favorites and is home to a selection of shops offering everything from travel essentials to cutting-edge electronic devices and accessories. Built in 1902, Whitehall, now known as the Henry Flagler Museum, was dubbed the grandest and most magnificent private dwelling in the world by the New York Herald. Named after its original owner, the industrialist, philanthropist and “father of Palm Beach” Henry Flagler, the 75-room, Beaux Arts-style mansion was saved from demolition by Flagler’s granddaughter in 1959 and opened up to the public as a unique American example of European extravagant architecture and lavish furnishing at the turn of the century.

Bursting with marble floors and columns, hand-painted murals on the ceilings and 24-carat gilding just about everywhere you look, entering the Henry Flagler Museum is like stepping into another world. The museum is just six miles (9.6 kilometers) from Palm Beach Airport.

Florida’s finest

With a collection of over 7,000 works that includes classic and contemporary examples of American, European and Chinese art and photography, the Norton Museum of Art is the largest and one of the most important establishments in Florida.

Founded in 1941 by former head of Acme Steel, Ralph Hubbard Norton, to display his private collection of paintings and sculpture, the museum grew steadily in popularity until 2001 when it underwent a huge expansion that quadrupled its size and scope.

Less than 10 minutes’ drive from PBI and featuring 14 different galleries, a three-story atrium and an enclosed courtyard that houses a wide variety of interactive and social events, the Norton Museum of Art has become a vital part of Palm Beach’s cultural community.

Much more than just an opportunity to watch these endangered gentle giants huddle and snuggle, the Energy Center has put together an array of informative and interactive events exploring the region’s unique relationship with the manatees and examining what more can be done to preserve, protect and provide for Florida’s rich natural environment and diverse wildlife.

Useful tips

What is West Palm Beach Airport?

Because the area around PBI is known as West Palm Beach, many locals refer to Palm Beach Airport as West Palm Beach Airport. Don’t worry if you hear both names being used - they both refer to the same place.

Plan ahead

As one of Florida’s busiest airports and the closest to the world-famous Palm Beach coastline, PBI, its parking facilities and the roads surrounding it can get busy, particularly during peak hours. Whether you’re a frequent flier or not, it’s a good idea to arrive at the airport with at least two hours before you fly domestically and three hours if you’re traveling to another country.

Check your height

Palm Beach Airport’s short-term and long-term parking lots incorporate multi-story facilities that operate height restrictions of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) throughout. If you’re planning on parking in either, it’s a good idea to double-check the height of your vehicle before you set off. If you are over the specified height or unsure of your vehicle's height, the open-air economy parking lots is only a short walk or an even shorter shuttle bus ride to the terminal.

Park properly

The bays outside the terminal building are exclusively for dropping off and picking up passengers and drivers are strictly prohibited from stopping their engines, parking or leaving their vehicles unattended. If you need a bit more time to wish your family and friends farewell or if you’ve arrived earlier than planned to pick them up, PBI provides completely free parking in the cell phone lot just a five-minute drive from the terminal, where you can wait until your passengers are ready to go or waiting to be picked up.

Protect your pictures

As a site of breathtaking natural beauty, Palm Beach is a hotspot for budding and professional photographers alike, but many visitors don’t know that the technology used in screening baggage at airports around the world can permanently damage undeveloped film. In order to keep your snaps safe, remember to keep your films in your carry-on baggage or request a hand inspection of your checked bags.
