Short-term parking (including Valet)

PIT’s multi-story Garage facility offers 2,100 short-term parking spaces and, as the closest lot to the terminal building, is ideal for people away for the day on tight schedules.

The airport’s unique underground people-mover is directly accessible from inside the Garage, which means you can check-in only a few steps from your car. This also makes the Garage facility useful for dropping off and picking up passengers as they can step on or off the people-mover and be instantly on their way to their departure gate or back home.

A luxury valet service is also available exclusively in the Garage facility, so remember to book a place if you want to come back to a cleaner car. It’s important to note that, as the Garage is a multi-story facility, a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) is in place throughout, so please double-check the height of your vehicle before booking a space.

Long-term parking

If you’re going to be away for a few days or if you’re traveling with more bags or children than you can manage in one go, PIT’s long-term parking lot is for you. More affordable than the Garage but just as convenient, the 3,100-capacity long-term facility features access to the airport’s people-mover as well as numerous shuttle stops from which a 24-hour complimentary bus service will take you to the terminal forecourt in less than five minutes.

Extended parking

As Pittsburgh Airport’s most economical parking option, the extended stay parking lot is ideal if you’re planning on being away for a week or longer or, indeed, you’re traveling on a budget. Although the extended parking facility has no access to the people-mover, it is well equipped with over 16 shuttle bus stops, so you’ll never have far to walk before being picked up.

With over 8,000 spaces available and your first hour of parking provided for free, PIT’s extended parking facility doubles up as a useful pick-up/drop-off zone and cell phone lot, where you can spend a bit more time wishing your passengers a good trip or, if you’re ahead of schedule, wait for their planes to touch down.

Location of Pittsburgh Airport

Located 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) west of downtown Pittsburgh, PIT is easily reachable from some of America’s major interstate highways. The airport can be found at Exit 53 of I-376, only 10 miles (16 kilometers) from I-79, 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) from I-76 and within an hour’s drive of I-70 to the south and I-80 to the north.

There are a number of bus routes that run services every half an hour between PIT and downtown Pittsburgh, passing through the University District and many of the regions, cities and towns south of Pittsburgh.

PIT doesn’t currently have its own dedicated rail facilities, but Pittsburgh Train Station (part of the transcontinental Amtrak network) is 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) away and easily accessible by car and bus.

History of Pittsburgh Airport

In 1940, it was decided by the federal government that Pittsburgh's rising industrial significance warranted a military airport in order to protect it. The open agricultural expanse of Moon Township north west of the city was chosen as the ideal site and construction of the first runways began in 1942, shortly after the USA had entered World War II. After the war, the military airfield was named Pittsburgh Airport and fitted with a huge, $33-million passenger terminal in 1952 - the largest in the country at the time - with an impressive 1.4 million visitors passing through in its first year alone.

Due to its remarkable popularity with visitors and airlines alike, PIT received a $1 billion expansion that was completed in 1992 and brought with it a revolutionary dual-terminal design among a host of innovative features that have since become industry standards around the world.

PIT’s landside check-in facility is connected to the cross-shaped airside departure gate section by an underground moving walkway, which allows 20 airlines to make the most of the airside section’s four concourses, four runways and 70 gates. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Southern Airways all use PIT as a hub.

Car

Pittsburgh Airport is located at Exit 53 on I-376, which is connected to some of America’s major Interstate highways including I-79, I-76, I-70 and I-80. The ZIP code for the airport is PA 15231.

Bus

The Allegheny County Port Authority’s 28X Airport Flyer bus service runs between PIT and the city every 30 minutes from 4:30am to midnight, 365 days a year. The average journey time is 15-20 minutes, but be aware that this can be longer in heavy traffic. An up-to-date schedule for the 28X service can be found here.

The Mountain Line Transit Service runs the Route 29 Grey Line Express Bus between PIT and areas south of Pittsburgh twice a day, every day of the year. Train

Pittsburgh Train Station is the closest station to the airport – it is located 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) to the east in the center of the city. It is easily accessible by public transport and, as part of the Amtrak network, connects the city to the rest of the country.

There are currently plans to extend Pittsburgh’s Light Rail system (known locally as ‘The T’) to include Pittsburgh Airport, which would make reaching PIT not only quick and easy, but more affordable and economical.

Leave time before take-off

Even though PIT’s terminal design prevents much of the queuing and congestion that is common at other airports, it can still get busy during peak periods. You should arrive at least 90 minutes before departure if you’re flying domestically and at least two hours before if you’re on an international flight.

Mind your head

As a multi-story facility, PIT’s short-term parking garage operates a 6.8-foot (2.1-meter) height restriction throughout. It’s good idea to double-check the height of your vehicle before you book a space.
