History of Roanoke Airport

1929 saw the inauguration of Roanoke Airport when the City of Roanoke leased the 136 acres site where the airport still stands today. The 1930s and 1940s saw the arrival of American Airlines, the first passenger airline service and ROA receiving qualification as a National Defense Project, which made it eligible for further funding. A dedication was later paid to Clifton A. Woodrum, who ensured the airport was chosen for the project, as the airport became Roanoke Municipal Airport/Woodrum Field. The 1980s saw a further name change to Roanoke Regional Airport/Woodrum Field and huge investment, creating the current terminal building. In 2014 Roanoke received its third and final name change to Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport reflecting the close economic link between the Roanoke and the New River Valleys. With the airport now operating at 100% capacity at peak times there is talk of further expansion.
