The Parking Garage

The Parking Garage is a multi-story facility opposite SAT’s terminal buildings with 5,000 spaces that can be used by airport visitors for up to 30 days. The Parking Garage is connected to the terminals by a covered walkway but, if you’re traveling with family or you have bags to carry, it is also on the route of the complimentary airport shuttle bus service that runs every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, and will take you from parking lot to terminal in five minutes.

When planning your parking at San Antonio Airport, it’s important to remember that, as a multi-story facility, the Parking Garage operates a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) throughout, so be sure to check the height of your vehicle before you set off. If your car is too big or if you’re at all unsure, the open-air Green Lot is only a minute’s drive away.

The Green Lot

The Green Lot is a large, open-air parking lot where visitors can leave their vehicles for up to 30 days. However, with it being slightly further away from the terminal buildings and priced accordingly in comparison to other lots, The Green Lot is an affordable alternative for those traveling on a budget. Once you have found a space and parked up, simply head for the nearest parking booth where a complimentary airport shuttle bus will pick you up within 15 minutes and drop you off outside the terminal within 10 minutes.

Pick-up/drop-off

SAT provides convenient bays directly outside the terminal buildings for drivers who are picking up and dropping off passengers. However, drivers are asked to spend no longer than one minute in these bays in order to avoid congestion, so if you’d like to spend a bit more time wishing your passengers a bon voyage, you can park in the Parking Garage, where your first 15 minutes are completely free. It’s only a two-minute walk to check-in from there.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot

If you’ve arrived to pick up some passengers before they’ve touched down, SAT provides a free place to park just five minutes' drive from the terminal buildings so you don’t have to endlessly circle the airport while you wait. The Waiting Lot’s complimentary WiFi means that you can keep yourself occupied while you wait and you’ll always be able to receive a message from your passengers to tell you they’ve arrived.

The four-square mile (10.5-square kilometer) site accommodates two terminals and three runways that serve more than a dozen international and domestic airlines, with non-stop routes to and from over 30 destinations around the world.

Location of San Antonio Airport

SAT is just eight miles (13 kilometers) north of downtown San Antonio, which serves as the urban core of the Greater San Antonio region. The airport is conveniently located at the intersection of two major road networks, making it easily reachable whether you’re driving from across town or another state. Interstate 410, known locally as Loop 410 and the Connally Loop, encircles San Antonio, while Highway 281 runs north from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and is the primary north-south corridor through the state of Texas.

A bus service makes the half-hour trip between SAT and downtown San Antonio every 20 minutes, from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. This bus service also stops at the North Star Transit Center, which acts as a hub for numerous regional bus services if you’re traveling from further afield.

Although San Antonio Airport doesn’t currently have its own rail station, the Amtrak San Antonio train station is only 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the airport and just a 15-minute taxi ride away.

History of San Antonio Airport

Founded in 1941, the unfinished San Antonio Municipal Airport was requisitioned by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and renamed Alamo Field. After the war, the airfield was returned to the city of San Antonio for civil use and the following decades saw a series of substantial expansions and upgrades, including a new control tower, two expansive terminal buildings and over 6,000 parking spaces.

Traffic passing through SAT reached over 3.5 million passengers a year at the turn of the century and that number more than doubled in the following 10 years thanks to an unprecedented growth in international travelers and routes. Its proximity to the border makes San Antonio Airport one of America’s major gateways to Mexico, with more than 50 flights departing to Mexican airports every week.

Experience the Revolution

Founded in 1954, the McNay Art Museum was the first of its kind in Texas. The 24-room mansion of Marion Koogler McNay, a painter, art teacher and philanthropist, is home to her important modern art collection and includes works by such iconic artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper.

The Cave Without a Name was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and has gone on to become a popular attraction for its natural beauty, scientific importance and remarkable acoustic potential. Given its intriguing moniker after a young boy declared it too beautiful to have a name, the 126 steps carved into the cave floor take visitors approximately 90 feet (27 meters) below the surface and into a series of chambers that showcase huge stalactites and stalagmites, which have formed over thousands of years.

The caves are a vital part of the local ecosystem, as well as being the seasonal home of a colony of rare pipistrelle bats and one of only two places in the world where the eyeless Kendall County Salamander can be found.

How to get to San Antonio Airport

Car

Whether you’re driving to SAT from downtown San Antonio or from out of state, the airport is easily accessible at the intersection of I-410, which runs in a loop around the city and Highway 281 (the road that serves as the primary north-south road through Texas).

Use the ZIP code TX 78216 to make your way there and then follow Airport Boulevard until you reach your parking lot.

Bus

VIA, San Antonio’s Metropolitan Transit Service, operates bus route 5 to provide transport every 20 minutes between the dedicated bus stop at the west end of Terminal B and downtown San Antonio.

Operating between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week, the route 5 bus takes around half an hour each way in regular traffic, but can take longer if the roads are congested. This service also stops at the North Star Transit Center, a hub for regional and interstate bus services, which is useful to note if you’re traveling on the bus from further away. Train

If you’re traveling to SAT on the train, the nearest rail facility is Amtrak San Antonio train station, just 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the airport and an easy 15-minute taxi ride away. There is no train station at the airport itself.

Arrive early

With over 23,000 daily visitors arriving and departing at San Antonio Airport, both terminals and parking lots can become especially busy during peak times, but you can make sure queues don't catch you out by arriving in plenty of time for your flight. If your flight departs before 7:30am, you should arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance. If you’re flying after 7:30am, you should arrive with at least 1.5 hours to spare.

Terminal terminology

At San Antonio Airport, Terminal A handles all international arrivals and departures, while Terminal B is for domestic travel only. Between 2010 and 2012, both terminal buildings underwent extensive redevelopment and were renamed from Terminals 1 and 2 to Terminals A and B, respectively, so don’t panic if someone accidentally refers to them by their old numbers.
