The Parking Garage

The Parking Garage is a multi-story facility opposite SAT’s terminal buildings with 5,000 spaces that can be used by airport visitors for up to 30 days. The Parking Garage is connected to the terminals by a covered walkway but, if you’re traveling with family or you have bags to carry, it is also on the route of the complimentary airport shuttle bus service that runs every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, and will take you from parking lot to terminal in five minutes.

When planning your parking at San Antonio Airport, it’s important to remember that, as a multi-story facility, the Parking Garage operates a height restriction of 6.8 feet (2.1 meters) throughout, so be sure to check the height of your vehicle before you set off. If your car is too big or if you’re at all unsure, the open-air Green Lot is only a minute’s drive away.

The Green Lot

The Green Lot is a large, open-air parking lot where visitors can leave their vehicles for up to 30 days. However, with it being slightly further away from the terminal buildings and priced accordingly in comparison to other lots, The Green Lot is an affordable alternative for those traveling on a budget. Once you have found a space and parked up, simply head for the nearest parking booth where a complimentary airport shuttle bus will pick you up within 15 minutes and drop you off outside the terminal within 10 minutes.

Pick-up/drop-off

SAT provides convenient bays directly outside the terminal buildings for drivers who are picking up and dropping off passengers. However, drivers are asked to spend no longer than one minute in these bays in order to avoid congestion, so if you’d like to spend a bit more time wishing your passengers a bon voyage, you can park in the Parking Garage, where your first 15 minutes are completely free. It’s only a two-minute walk to check-in from there.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot

If you’ve arrived to pick up some passengers before they’ve touched down, SAT provides a free place to park just five minutes' drive from the terminal buildings so you don’t have to endlessly circle the airport while you wait. The Waiting Lot’s complimentary WiFi means that you can keep yourself occupied while you wait and you’ll always be able to receive a message from your passengers to tell you they’ve arrived.

As the premier transport gateway for the seventh-largest city in the USA, San Antonio International Airport (SAT) welcomes over 8.5 million visitors every year. The four-square mile (10.5-square kilometer) site accommodates two terminals and three runways that serve more than a dozen international and domestic airlines, with non-stop routes to and from over 30 destinations around the world.

Location of San Antonio Airport

SAT is just eight miles (13 kilometers) north of downtown San Antonio, which serves as the urban core of the Greater San Antonio region. The airport is conveniently located at the intersection of two major road networks, making it easily reachable whether you’re driving from across town or another state. Interstate 410, known locally as Loop 410 and the Connally Loop, encircles San Antonio, while Highway 281 runs north from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and is the primary north-south corridor through the state of Texas.

A bus service makes the half-hour trip between SAT and downtown San Antonio every 20 minutes, from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. This bus service also stops at the North Star Transit Center, which acts as a hub for numerous regional bus services if you’re traveling from further afield.

Although San Antonio Airport doesn’t currently have its own rail station, the Amtrak San Antonio train station is only 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the airport and just a 15-minute taxi ride away.

History of San Antonio Airport

Founded in 1941, the unfinished San Antonio Municipal Airport was requisitioned by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and renamed Alamo Field. After the war, the airfield was returned to the city of San Antonio for civil use and the following decades saw a series of substantial expansions and upgrades, including a new control tower, two expansive terminal buildings and over 6,000 parking spaces.

Traffic passing through SAT reached over 3.5 million passengers a year at the turn of the century and that number more than doubled in the following 10 years thanks to an unprecedented growth in international travelers and routes. Its proximity to the border makes San Antonio Airport one of America’s major gateways to Mexico, with more than 50 flights departing to Mexican airports every week.

Through the implementation of a plan that includes yet another multi-million-dollar expansion project, SAT intends to further increase its international reach as well as the number of travelers, airlines and routes using the airport throughout the 21st century.

Airport facilities

Both of SAT’s two terminal buildings are bursting with some of the finest examples of the region’s famous Tex-Mex flavor. Alongside an array of outlets offering all the essentials and facilities you would expect from a prestigious 21st century travel hub, San Antonio Airport boasts cafés, delis, restaurants and bars with local and international food and drink. There is also a range of shops selling everything from bestselling books and cutting-edge technologies to Texas-themed jewelry, homeware and hot sauce.

Top things to do near San Antonio Airport

Experience the Revolution

A pivotal place in Texan history and now one of the state’s most popular visitor attractions, the Alamo is an 18th-century Catholic mission where the legendary Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836. A Mexican army of 1,500 laid siege on the mission and the 100 troops trapped within, killing almost all of them. This barbaric act inspired Texan soldiers and civilians alike to band together and retaliate. Their heroic victory against all odds led to Texas being declared a republic and eventually the 28th state of the United States of America.

Now housing a museum, memorial and education center with live-action exhibitions, displays and interactive recreations, the Alamo mission is a unique way to experience a crucial moment in American history and it is only an eight-mile drive south from SAT.

A Texan treasure

Founded in 1954, the McNay Art Museum was the first of its kind in Texas. The 24-room mansion of Marion Koogler McNay, a painter, art teacher and philanthropist, is home to her important modern art collection and includes works by such iconic artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper.

What’s more, the museum building is just as stunning as the 20,000-strong collection it houses. The Neo-Colonial mansion is surrounded by 23 acres (9.3 hectares) of rolling lawns, elaborate fountains, exotic gardens and fishponds. If you like your modernist masterpieces with a side of sunshine, the McNay Art Museum is only 10 minutes away from the airport by car.

Take a walk on the wild side

With more than 3,500 animals living there and more than one million visitors passing through every year, the San Antonio Zoo is one of the oldest and most prestigious zoos in the USA. Founded in 1914, it now boasts 10 different exhibits showcasing animals from around the world, as well as a number of rides, interactive displays and a year-round calendar of family-friendly events.

The zoo is also renowned for its work in protecting and breeding critically endangered species and offers animal-lovers an incredible opportunity to see rare black rhinos, African lions and Komodo dragons.

Museum madness

One of the first of its kind, the DoSeum is a museum that actively encourages children to touch, play and run around in its exhibits. With colorful and interactive environments that range from a code-breaking spy academy to a musical staircase, the DoSeum is designed to inspire children through learning and play. With 5.5 acres (2.2 hectares) of indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits only eight miles (12.9 kilometers) away from San Antonio Airport, the DoSeum is ideal if your kids could do with burning off some energy before a long flight.

A world underground

The Cave Without a Name was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and has gone on to become a popular attraction for its natural beauty, scientific importance and remarkable acoustic potential. Given its intriguing moniker after a young boy declared it too beautiful to have a name, the 126 steps carved into the cave floor take visitors approximately 90 feet (27 meters) below the surface and into a series of chambers that showcase huge stalactites and stalagmites, which have formed over thousands of years.

The caves are a vital part of the local ecosystem, as well as being the seasonal home of a colony of rare pipistrelle bats and one of only two places in the world where the eyeless Kendall County Salamander can be found.

Be sure to check the cave’s events calendar around the time of your visit to SAT, as you might be there in time to catch one of the series of concerts that take place at the cave throughout the year. It’s the perfect chance to experience its unique acoustic properties.

Fill your boots

Ever wondered how big a pair of boots can be? Well, wonder no more as the world’s biggest pair of cowboy boots, standing at an impressive 40 feet (12 meters) tall, are on display only two miles (3.2 kilometers) from San Antonio Airport.

For over 30 years, the boots have marked the entrance to the North Star Mall and are a beloved part of San Antonio’s culture, synonymous with the region’s rich Texan history. As well as adopting the enormous boots, the extensive North Star Mall houses over 200 specialty stores and restaurants only an eight-minute drive away from the airport.

Useful tips

Arrive early

With over 23,000 daily visitors arriving and departing at San Antonio Airport, both terminals and parking lots can become especially busy during peak times, but you can make sure queues don't catch you out by arriving in plenty of time for your flight. If your flight departs before 7:30am, you should arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance. If you’re flying after 7:30am, you should arrive with at least 1.5 hours to spare.

Terminal terminology

At San Antonio Airport, Terminal A handles all international arrivals and departures, while Terminal B is for domestic travel only. Between 2010 and 2012, both terminal buildings underwent extensive redevelopment and were renamed from Terminals 1 and 2 to Terminals A and B, respectively, so don’t panic if someone accidentally refers to them by their old numbers.

Ask an ambassador

Visitors to San Antonio Airport are supported by a team of volunteer Airport Ambassadors. Members of the team are easily recognizable in their denim vests and cowboy hats. Friendly and well-informed, the ambassadors can give you plenty of help and advice whether you’re lost, hungry or just looking for something fun to do before you fly.

Parking patrol

SAT’s Parking Division is on hand around the clock, 365 days a year, and provides complimentary battery starts, tire inflation and vehicle location services if you find yourself stuck. Give them a call on (+1) 210 207 3465 and they’ll be with you in minutes.

Longer-stay parking

If you’re planning on being away for longer than the 30-day parking maximum, simply call the airport’s Parking Division on (+1) 210 207 3465 to make a custom longer-term parking arrangement that suits your plans.

Free pick-up/drop-off

If you’re driving travelers to or from the airport, your first 15 minutes in the Parking Garage multi-story facility are free. From there, it’s just a short walk or a five-minute shuttle bus ride to check-in.
