Long-term parking

The RSW Long-Term Parking Lot is a ground level parking area. It is located behind the Short-Term Parking Garage and is the most economical option for extended stays. To save you walking to the terminal with heavy baggage, a free shuttle service is available to take you from the Long-Term Parking Lot right up to the terminal curb; the shuttle bus driver will be happy to lend a hand when you are loading and unloading your luggage.

You will incur charges on an hourly basis for the first 24 hours of your stay in the Long-Term Parking Lot, although a daily maximum rate ensures your costs won't continue to spiral beyond a certain point. You are then charged a set amount for your first week and a daily rate after your initial seven-day stay.

Short-term parking

The Short-Term Parking Garage is a multi-story facility located directly opposite the main terminal building. The first 20 minutes of your stay in this lot are free, which makes it a great place to drop off friends or family members.

Pick-up area

The airport operators do not allow parking or waiting outside the terminal, but if you’re waiting to pick someone up, you can go to ‘Cell Phone Lot’, which is just two minutes’ drive from the main building. When you receive the call that lets you know your passenger has arrived, you can then make the short drive to the terminal curb to pick them up.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is the fifth-busiest airport in Florida and the 44th-busiest in the United States. It handles more than eight million passengers every year, most of whom reside in Fort Myers, although many also come from Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Naples, Sanibel Island and other destinations in Southwest Florida. There are 12 airlines offering flights to more than 80 regional and international destinations from Southwest Florida Airport.

Location of Southwest Florida Airport

RSW is located 15.9 miles (25.6 kilometers) south east of Fort Myers, the commercial center of Lee County. It is easy to reach by road from downtown Fort Myers and elsewhere in the region due to its proximity to the I-75 Highway.

There are no trains or direct bus routes to RSW from downtown Fort Myers. However, if you’re traveling by bus, you can get to the airport by changing routes in Villas. Likewise, there aren’t any free shuttles to the airport from Fort Myers but, some hotels in the area offer a complimentary shuttle service, while private third-party shuttle buses are also available.

History of Southwest Florida Airport

RSW is a relatively young airport, having only opened in May 1983. Its original terminal building was situated on Chamberlin Parkway just north of the runway and began life with a modest capacity of just three million passengers per year.

Unlike many airports of this small size, Southwest Florida Regional Airport (as it was then known) quickly became a base for international travel, with the first transcontinental plane taking off from RSW in 1984 and U.S. Customs operating at the airport from 1987 onwards. The airport changed its name to Southwest Florida International Airport in 1993 to reflect its status as a hub for global travel.

Having exceeded its annual capacity in 1988, an overdue expansion in the late 1990s added three extra gates to the airport. However, this proved to be an insufficient solution to the ever-swelling demand for RSW’s services, with close to seven million passengers passing through the airport by 2004. In response, a new state-of-the-art terminal was opened in September 2005, at a cost of nearly $440 million.

RSW now boasts three concourses and 28 gates, although there is enough space in the current terminal to add two more concourses and 37 extra gates in the future as traffic levels continue to increase.

Airport facilities

Despite being the smallest airport in Florida, RSW offers an extensive list of facilities. Unusually, there’s no duty free store at this airport, but there is a high-end retail outlet selling clothes and accessories to help you get ready to hit the beach or plan an outfit for a city break. There are also various high street coffee shops where you can grab a quick pick-me-up before an early-morning flight, while the restaurants at RSW serve everything from fast food and club sandwiches to classy island cuisine.

If you require any kind of special assistance, the RSW Accessibility Services page is a helpful source of relevant phone numbers, links and other information.

Top things to do in Southwest Florida Airport

Get ready to hit the beach (or buy a seaside keepsake)

Florida is famous across the world for its beaches and they don’t come much more beautiful than in the Southwest. Indeed, the beach views are one of RSW’s defining features; as soon as you set foot outside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by stunning dark blue waters and gorgeous white sand. If you don’t want to waste any time preparing for your time on the beach, RSW is ideal.

Venture into Brighton Collectibles and choose from a stunning range of summery clothes and accessories to ensure you look the part before you set foot on the sand. You can also pay a visit to Day at the Beach, a shop fully stocked with all the snacks, drinks and books you'll need to stay occupied while you bask in the sun and bathe in the sea.

If you’ve ever been to Southwest Florida, you’ll know that one thing the beaches here aren’t short of is seashells. The Shell Factory is a unique retail store that sells some of the finest shells and fossils from around the local area. Here, you’ll find a wealth of great souvenirs and gifts in the shape of jewelry boxes and candles made from (you’ve guessed it) seashells. You can also buy shell-inspired photo frames, mugs and keyrings, in addition to real shark teeth and jaws.

Buy essential gadgets and accessories

As its name suggests, Esavvy is a retail outlet dedicated to high-quality electronic goods. From media players to laptops, phones, chargers, batteries and a host of other accessories, this store provides all the hi-tech gadgets you could ever need while on the move.

If you arrive at RSW only to find you’ve left your earphones or your phone charger at home, make your way over to Esavvy and get everything you need to keep your gadgets running.

Get ready to play golf on the pro course of your choice

The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) lists 37 golf courses in Fort Myers and when it comes to finding pristine greens and challenging fairways in the area, keen golfers are very much spoiled for choice. In fact, professionals like Nolan Jay Henke, Derek Lamely and George McNeill have all made 'The City of Palms' their home for this very reason.

With all of this in mind, it’s little wonder that RSW has a PGA Tour Shop on-site. To look and feel the part before you tee-off, come to this store to pick up professional golf clubs, balls, clothing and other essential golf equipment.

Treat yourself to a relaxing massage

There’s no doubt that airports can be stressful places at times, but you can get your troubles massaged away to the backdrop of relaxing music at Comfort Zone Massage.

As well as massages, professional treatments include facials, manicures and pedicures to help you look a million dollars for a few dollars.

Do some plane-spotting

While the RSW website doesn’t mention the airport's ample opportunities for plane-spotting, there are nevertheless some excellent observation areas to be found. The dedicated observation zone is a fenced area with picnic tables and superb views of the runway, but dedicated plane-spotters seem to agree that the best place to take photos of planes taking off and landing is on the upper level outside Concourse D.

Enjoy a meal or a morning pick-me-up

Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts, American Bagel and Starbucks are just a few of the outlets ready to ensure you’re not left disappointed if you fancy a bite to eat or a choice of refreshing drinks during your time at RSW. If you’re looking for something a little more filling, try Casa Bacardi in Concourse D for an impressive menu of high-quality Mexican food.

See seashells from seashores across the world

Due to its unique location, the coastline on the south west of Florida boasts some of the finest seashells on Earth. If you enjoy collecting shells, you have any interest in marine biology or you just appreciate the beauty of nature, be sure to visit Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. This museum displays shells collected from beaches on the islands surrounding Fort Myers and across the world.

One of the exhibits also showcases the roles seashells have played in architecture, art and culture throughout human history. The ‘Children’s Learning Lab’ features life-size models of Florida’s indigenous people to illustrate how they made use of the abundant natural resources in ancient times.

Visit the homes of legends in American industrial history

The winter home of the inventor of the first practical lightbulb, The Thomas Edison Winter Estate, and the permanent residence of the Ford Motor Company founder, Henry Ford Estate, sit side-by-side in Fort Myers.

Seminole Lodge was the Edisons’ winter residence for almost half a century and is widely considered to be among the finest examples of 19th-century architecture in a South-Floridian style. Meanwhile, Ford’s mansion was built in 1916 and still features much of its original furniture and fittings.

These legends of American industry were very close friends; in fact, the two men’s estates are separated by what is now known as a ‘friendship gate’. Come here to see nine beautifully-preserved historical buildings and 20 acres (8.1 hectares) of botanical gardens.

Edison’s garden comprises more than 1,000 plant varieties from all over the world. These include a 400-foot (122-meter) high banyan tree and a number of African Sausage Trees. And while Mina Edison grew roses and orchids for their sheer beauty, the bamboo trees were actually grown for use in her famous husband’s lightbulb filaments.

Turn your vacation into a whodunit

For a fun evening away from RSW, you can step aboard the All Murder Mystery Dinner Train in Fort Myers just 20 minutes' drive from the airport and play a part in solving a murder mystery after dinner.

Choose from a nice list of menu options for a five-course meal, with main courses including ‘Dublin’s Own Jameson Prime Rib’, ‘Killer Chicken Cordon Bleu’ and ‘Super Sleuth Salmon’. After dinner, you’ll watch the show and collect clues for your chance to be crowned the super sleuth of your dining carriage.

Become a beach bum

Southwest Florida is home to a number of expansive, golden beaches, many of which tend to get very busy. But if you want to sunbathe or splash around in your own private paradise, you can do so at Bowman's Beach in Sanibel Island.

Located in a quiet park off Sanibel-Captiva Road, Bowman's Beach’s seclusion offers plenty of opportunities to collect seashells. At the point between low and high tide, the beach is covered in beautiful seashells of all shapes and sizes and if you venture into the warm, blue sea for a swim, you might well encounter local marine life including dolphins, manatees and sea turtles.

Useful tips

Charging stations are available

Charging stations are located at the RSW Airport Service Plaza, which is an on-site convenience store and gas station on Terminal Access Road. All of its services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You may use the on-site business services

The Travelex Business Center includes internet kiosks that allow you to check and send emails, as well as fax and photocopying services to help you keep up with work on the go. The outlet also includes US Mail and FedEx drop-off points. It is located on the second-floor hall leading to Concourse B and is open every day from 9am to 5pm (not 24 hours, as some online information claims).

You must contact a licensed third-party for valet parking

Executive Valet Parking has an agreement with Lee County (RSW's operators) that allows the third-party company to make use of the airport and offer dedicated valet parking. Go to the Executive Valet Parking website for more details.

You are not allowed to park or wait at the curbside

If you are picking up or dropping off passengers at RSW, it is important for your safety and that of others on-site that you avoid parking or waiting directly outside the terminal building. The Cell Phone Lot is just a short drive from the main building and you can wait there for free. After you receive the call to let you know that your passenger has arrived, you can then drive up and meet them. If you’re dropping off, you can take advantage of the Short-Term Parking Garage, as it’s free for the first 20 minutes and helps you avoid unnecessary charges.

Keep your luggage in check

To help ensure your time at Southwest Florida Airport is free from hassle, start by securing all straps and other loose pieces to the baggage with tape and close all pockets and zips. Remove all old airport tags or stickers and place all new ones so that they are clearly visible on the outside of the bag.

Remember that different airlines have separate regulations for weight and size limits. If you’re unsure of the ones that apply to you, contact your airline for more information before you travel.
