Alaska Native Heritage Center
For those interested in learning about the unique Alaskan cultures, the Native Heritage Center sits just 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Anchorage Airport. With a performance hall where natives tell stories, play games and dance, traditional dwellings with tours by native guides and a gallery, it is an interesting and educational experience for all the family.
Alaska Aviation Museum
You don’t even have to get in to your car to visit the Alaska Aviation Museum, at just half a mile (0.8 kilometers) you can walk from ANC airport and take in the 25 restored airplanes and wide collection of memorabilia. Located on the shores of Lake Hood, the world’s busiest floatplane lake, you can do a bit of plane-spotting while you are there.
Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
The Tony Knowles Coastal trail is ideal for those who want to take in the natural beauty of Alaska and stretch their legs. You can walk, cycle, run or rollerblade the 11 mile (18 kilometer) trail in summer and in winter you can even ski it. It starts just three miles (four and a half kilometers) from the airport and finishes at Kincaid Park. The trail is easy to follow and suitable for all the family.
Alaska Zoo
To experience native Arctic wildlife take the ten mile (16 kilometers) trip to the Alaska Zoo. Set in 30 acres it is home to a wide variety of native wildlife species from bears to snow leopards and it even has a small collection of exotic animals. There’s a free shuttle bus that runs to and from downtown in the summer months and for those who want to get that bit closer, booking in advance you can have a special encounters tour where you see the animals in a behind-the-scenes setting.
Anchorage Museum
Not your average museum, the Anchorage Museum offers hours of entertainment for adults and children alike. Famous for it’s Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center with more than 600 Alaska Native objects, it’s exhibits are surrounded by videos showing Native life. There’s also a Listening Space to hear storytellers, the Imaginarium Discovery Center for children, and numerous traveling exhibitions.
Chugach State Park
For outdoor enthusiasts Chugach State Park, the third largest in the USA, is just a 20 minute drive from ANC airport. The 700 square mile (over 1800 square kilometer) terrain is home to a variety of species from wolves to moose. You can spend the day trekking, kayaking, biking, rafting, climbing , fishing or simply exploring the breathtaking mountains, rivers, glaciers and lakes in this untouched part of Alaska.
Anchorage Market and Festival
What started out as a small local market in 1992 has now converted into a meeting point for over 300 vendors selling clothes, food, crafts and providing live entertainment. If you have children be sure to call in at the kids’ market where your little ones can buy goods made by other children. Open from May to September Saturdays and Sundays from 10am, it’s less than a 25 minute drive from Anchorage Airport.
Kincaid Park
At only a 15 minute drive from ANC aiport you can escape city life without leaving the city. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and an incredible array of Alaskan wildlife it really is a fantastic place to get rid of any of that travel induced stress. Whether you want to adventure through the wilderness or have a leisurely day out Kencaid Park is the perfect urban escape.
