Charleston State Capitol
The State Capitol building in Charleston, located in the State Capitol Complex and designed in the Italian Renaissance Style, is one of the most visited sites in the city. With its 300 foot gold dome and immense chandelier it sits majestically above the River Kanawha. If you want to learn about the 333 room building you can book onto one of the tours that run every half hour from Monday to Friday 9am until 12pm and 1pm until 3pm. If not, you can simply stroll around the grounds and admire one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the US.
Magic Island
Charleston has its own island in the center of the city and you can get there in just ten minutes from Yeager Airport. Go for a walk, play beach volleyball or see one of the sporting or movie events. You might even get chance to see the ‘Magic’ of Magic Island as it can slip underwater and disappear depending on the level of the Kanawha River. Under three miles (four and a half kilometers) from CRW Airport you can visit the center designed to preserve and present the art, culture, and history of West Virginia. With videos, simulations and even events, it’s an enriching experience for the old and young alike.
Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences
The incredible Clay Center houses performing arts, visual arts and sciences all in one location. The 240,000 square feet complex is a sure success if you are looking for fun things to do with the kids close to Yeager Airport. Kanawha State Forest
For outdoor lovers, the Kanawha State Forest is the place to go. You can hike, bike, ski, kayak or camp and it’s just under 11 miles (17.5 kilometers) from Yeager Airport. Popular with families because of its picnic and play areas, it is also a key destination for nature lovers as it boasts incredible birdlife. This 9,300 acre park is the perfect place to stretch your legs, relax and take in the stunning scenery of Charleston.
East End Historic District
Head to the oldest community in Charleston, home to the Clay Center for the Arts and the State Capitol, to take in the amazing architecture ranging from Greek Revival to the late Victorian era. If you want a vibrant area with bars and restaurants, this is the place for you. Haddad Riverfront Park
At just four and a half miles (seven kilometers) from CRW Airport, this modern park is a perfect place for a family trip. Not just a nice place to have a picnic, it also has a 2,500 seated 36,000 square foot amphitheater where events are hosted throughout the year, ranging from car shows to cook-offs.
The Governor’s Mansion
Just next to the State Capitol Building sits the Governor’s Mansion located on the grounds of the Capital Complex. This 30 room mansion is open for guided tours which must be reserved in advance and take place on Thursdays and Fridays from 9am until 11:30am. Be sure to take plenty of time to stroll through the gardens, arguably the most beautiful part of the mansion complex.
