Four major airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines offer non-stop flights to nine cities. In terms of land mass CRW Airport covers approximately 775 acres and is home to the McLaughlin Air National Guard Base where several military aircraft are kept onsite. This airport, sitting on a hilltop at around 100 meters above the valleys of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers, has been described as fast, efficient and friendly.

Location of Yeager Airport

Yeager Airport is located just five miles (eight kilometers) east of downtown Charleston, in Kanawha County, West Virginia and its hilltop location gives passengers fantastic views of downtown as they arrive. CRW is conveniently located close to the intersection of three major interstates (I-64, I-77 and I-79), so driving to and from the airport from nearby cities is straight forward.

You can reach downtown Charleston from Yeager Airport by renting a car, or taking a taxi or a hotel shuttle service. The car rental concessions are located in the baggage claim area and the parking lot is right next to the terminal.

If you want to take a taxi the ten minute ride to downtown Charleston, you can catch one next to the rental car lot. They are available from 5am until after the arrival of the last flight of the day and there’s no need to reserve in advance.

For those planning onward travel from Charleston you have the option to catch a train from the Amtrak Station or a bus from the Greyhound Station, both less than a 15 minute drive from Yeager Airport.

History of Yeager Airport

Yeager Airport first opened in 1930 as Wertz Field when the City of Charleston, unable to fund the development of a planned airfield, leased the land to a group of businessmen who decided to form West Virginia Airways. The site soon became too small and, with no valley floor in the area deemed suitable, a new site was chosen on a hilltop. The airport project was immense with 360 acres of mountainous land having to be cleared and a special pipeline being laid 4,000 feet to take the 2,500 gallons of diesel needed to operate the equipment. The scale of the venture lead to funding problems which meant the new airport didn’t come into existence until 1947. The following years saw growth, increasing passenger numbers and a renaming in 1985, honoring Brigadier General Chuck Yeager who piloted the first supersonic flight in a Bell X-1. Yeager Airport has since seen further growth and now attends to nearly half a million passengers each year.

Charleston State Capitol

The State Capitol building in Charleston, located in the State Capitol Complex and designed in the Italian Renaissance Style, is one of the most visited sites in the city. From the north take I-77S, from the south I-77N, from the west I-64E to Charleston and then the I-77S, and from the east I-79S and then I-77S. CRW is located off Exit 99 marked ‘State Capitol’. You need to bear right at the end of the exit onto Greenbrier Street where there will be signs taking you the three miles (four point eight kilometers) to the airport.
