Winnipeg Airport parking

Economy

Both short-term and long-term parking stalls are available on the economy surface parking lot at Winnipeg International Airport. This uncovered facility is a seven-minute walk from the airport’s terminal building and provides economical parking spaces with no height restrictions.

Parkade

The Parkade at YWG is conveniently located just three minutes' walk from the terminal building and is covered on Levels 1 and 2. Passengers can find short- and long-term parking here, as well as designated family parking facilities, 24/7 security, baggage carts, pay stations and additional services like battery boosts and complimentary tire inflation. Please note that the Parkade has vehicle height restrictions of 7.2 feet (2.2 meters).

Drop-off and pick-up

This airport suggests that anyone dropping off or picking up passengers should park and wait, particularly if you do not have telephone contact with the passenger you're picking up. This would involve paying to park in the airport’s short-term parking facilities and either waiting for your passenger in the car or heading to one of the pre-security restaurants or cafés and meeting them there, before making your way back to the car together. There are curbside parking options on Arrivals Level 1 and Departures Level 2, but drivers cannot wait there and security directives are in place to prevent cars from waiting without paying to park.

Valet and Away

The premium valet service at YWG allows passengers to simply hand over their keys to a valet attendant and have the rest of the work done for them. Valet attendants will park your vehicle for you and have it ready and waiting at the terminal building on your return, having washed it, changed its oil and even taken care of any dry-cleaning requirements.

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG), also known as Winnipeg International Airport, is one of Canada’s busiest, with just over five million passengers per year passing through its doors.

As the only commercial international airport in Manitoba and a hub for passenger airlines such as Calm Air, YWG operates daily flights to locations within Canada and around the USA, the Caribbean and Mexico, as well as other destinations on a seasonal basis.

Location of Winnipeg Airport

Situated in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometers) from the city of Winnipeg, the biggest city in Manitoba province. Easily accessed by car, bus and bicycle, this airport can be reached via the Yellowhead Highway or by train from various destinations connecting with Winnipeg Union Station, which is six miles (nine kilometers) from the airport.

Many nearby hotels provide shuttle bus services that connect passengers with YWG and taxis are typically available at the airport, near Exit 3 of the main terminal building. The airport offers vehicle rental from a number of providers, along with ample bicycle parking for cyclists.

History of Winnipeg Airport

Stevenson Aerodrome, named after Manitoba aviator and pioneer bush pilot, Captain Fred J. Stevenson, opened in 1928 for the use of the Winnipeg Flying Club. Located at an airfield in the rural municipality of St James, the aerodrome was little more than a small cabin and a hangar large enough for folding wing aircraft only.

The facility grew dramatically during World War II, with new buildings, offices and runways being installed to cope with the requirements of the Royal Canadian Air Force, but it wasn't until 1952 that a passenger terminal was developed.

Stevenson Field was renamed Winnipeg International Airport in 1958 and the airport became community-owned in 1997, when it was transferred from Transport Canada to the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

On December 10 2006, the airport was renamed Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in honour of the Winnipegian pioneer of aviation who died two years prior.

Airport Facilities

Despite having just one large and one relatively small terminal building, Winnipeg International Airport contains a wide range of convenient shops offering travel items as well as traditional Canadian treats and souvenirs, alongside an extensive selection of dining options. Kids can be kept entertained browsing the Toad Hall toy shop while the adults can cover all those last-minute essentials in the various newsagents and luggage stores.

Passengers with special requirements can contact staff at the airport before arrival on +1 204-087-9402 or visit the accessibility page here.

Top things to do in Winnipeg Airport

Take an airport tour

Catching a flight from YWG doesn’t guarantee a comprehensive view of its grounds or its buildings, but the airport provides tours of the publicly accessible areas of its terminal building, courtesy of Winnipeg Airports Authority.

Hosted by the airport’s Goldwing Ambassadors, these free tours are an interesting way to pass some time before heading through security, taking in the airport’s history, artwork, services, logistics and leadership in energy and environmental design.

Hit the shops

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is not dominated by its shopping facilities and the stores located on-site have been carefully selected to provide passengers with a good selection of travel essentials, Canadian gifts and souvenirs and exciting things for kids to enjoy.

You can indulge your sweet tooth and try some specialist Canadian confectionery at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which creates many of its products on-site, or pick up some authentic maple syrup from one of the various Canada-themed gift shops.

Let the kids run wild

Winnipeg Airport features two play areas that are perfect for entertaining the little ones before they fly. Equipped with plenty of comfortable seating for parents looking for a place to kick back with a coffee while keeping an eye on the kids, the airport’s play areas are located opposite Tim Hortons on the Arrival level and after security on the Departures level. There are family washrooms located near the play areas and these include baby-changing facilities.

Indulge in Canada’s cuisine

Whether you’re in the mood for street food or a healthy option, fast food or a drink or two, YWG has dining facilities to satisfy every mood. For a real slice of Canada, try Tim Hortons - one of North America’s most popular quick-service restaurant chains. Alternatively, hit Freshii for nutritious meals and snacks that will fit in with gym diets, vegetarian lifestyles and healthy appetites.

Take in the view

Fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows that run the length of the room, the departures lounge is the perfect place to gaze upon the runway, the airport grounds and the Canadian landscape in the distance.

From a comfy seat here or even from the plush armchairs of the slightly setback Plaza Premium Lounge, passengers can relax with a coffee and watch the somewhat hypnotic display of planes taking off and coming in to land throughout the day and night.

Go bargain hunting at the market

The Forks is Winnipeg’s hottest meeting place and most popular tourist attraction, offering a unique shopping experience, delicious dining options and a packed calendar of events and entertainment.

In operation since the early 1900s, originally as two stables owned by rival rail companies, The Forks Market has an array of shops and is divided into two sections. The ground floor, known simply as 'The Market', is the food emporium, abuzz all-year-round with shoppers in search of drinks, baked goods, organic food and gourmet cheeses. The first floor, otherwise known as 'The Market Loft', houses 75 unique shops stocking everything from aboriginal art to clothing, jewelry and toys. The Forks Market is just 3.6 miles (5.7 kilometers) from the airport.

Learn about life in Winnipeg

Among the buildings that stand out on Winnipeg’s distinctive skyline, the strikingly modern architecture of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is one of the most eye-catching. The first museum of its kind and the only one in the world to focus solely on the development and existence of global human rights, this museum was first established in order to engage its visitors in a life-changing experience - one that could have a positive and inspirational impact on getting people involved in human rights work.

Packed with galleries, exhibitions, interactive learning apparatus and educational programs, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights has something for everyone and is located just 3.6 miles (5.7 kilometers) from the airport.

See the city's artistic side

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is not your typical art gallery. Boasting unusual architecture, fascinating history and an ethos that strives to promote peace and recognize the history of the indigenous peoples of North America, the gallery reflects many facets of life in the city.

Built on lands that originally belonged to the Ininiwak and Anishininiwak peoples, among others, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is made of Manitoba Tyndall stone and is designed to look like the prow of a ship. It contains an auditorium, a sculpture garden, meeting and lecture rooms, a research library and eight galleries replete with artwork of national and international acclaim. It is just 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers) from the airport and promises an educational day for all who visit.

Take a stroll through the sculpture garden

The Leo Mol Sculpture Garden is a peaceful and picturesque haven in the center of Winnipeg, where the artworks of world-renowned sculptor, Dr Leo Mol, are on display in a lush, green setting. Just 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometers) from Winnipeg International Airport, the garden's grounds are also home to an art gallery and the Leo Mol School House Studio.

If you're at YWG and need a place to get away from the noise and crowds, you can make the short journey to the sculpture garden and gaze upon works of bronze and plaster cast or just enjoy the beautifully maintained landscape.

Explore Western Canada’s aviation history

The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada is just 0.6 miles (one kilometer) from the airport and houses a massive collection of passenger aircraft, bush planes and Canadian innovations in aviation.

Visitors can enjoy guided tours, hold their own private events, browse the extensive collection of aircraft or visit the museum’s library and archives. There is a gift shop packed with souvenirs and prints from some of the exhibitions that can be seen at the museum's Airborne Art Project.

The museum is committed to celebrating, maintaining and showcasing Canada’s fascinating history of aviation and makes for a great couple of hours of entertainment within walking distance of the airport.

Though Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport does have two terminals, it is the Main Terminal from which the majority of its passenger services operate. One of Canada’s busiest airports, YWG provides regular domestic flights and also seasonal flights to popular destinations such as the Caribbean and Mexico.

The airlines currently offering public flights to and from Winnipeg Airport can be found on the Winnipeg Airport website.

Useful Tips

Plan your journey in advance

Though Winnipeg Richardson International Airport strives to be one of the most accessible airports in Canada, it is advisable that you call in advance to make arrangements for any accessibility requirements or special assistance. As well as contacting the airport, you should speak to the airline with which you will be traveling in order for them to provide assistance and equipment such as wheelchairs and walking aids and to offer you an escort pass to allow another person to accompany you to the gate.

Friendly attendants can be found at the Travelers' Aid kiosk, which is situated on the Departures level by Door 1. Read the airport’s accessibility brochure online here for a detailed breakdown of on-site accessibility or alternatively contact the airport on +1 204-987-9402.

Make use of the airport chapel

Situated on the Departures level after security, the chapel at Winnipeg Airport provides passengers with a quiet sanctuary and a safe place away from the bustle of the terminal. This is a specially designated area for travelers of all faiths to pray, rest and meditate before a flight. The non-denominational Aviation Interfaith Ministry also offers pastoral care at the chapel.

Don’t be afraid to bring along your pet

While some airports do not allow pets on-site, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport does and it features a specially created animal relief area for your four-legged friends.

Passengers who require a service animal while they travel are entitled to bring them along to this airport, while household pets are admitted as long as they are kept in a pet carrier. The animal relief area is located on the arrivals level by Door 3 and your furry companions are sure to feel at home in the green park-like space provided for them. For an extensive description of the airport’s pet policy, visit the official website here.

Use the valet service for a touch of luxury

The Valet and Away service at this airport is great for anyone traveling with children or a lot of luggage who would like the parking part of their journey to be made as simple as possible. As well as a parking attendant to park your vehicle before you take off and greet you with it when you land, Valet and Away includes car washing, oil changing and even laundry services for customers.

Dress for the weather

If you’re jetting off for some sunshine during the cold Canadian winter, you might face the predicament of knowing how to dress for your flight and your time at the airport, before arriving among the warmer climes of your destination. Luckily, YWG has a 24-hour coat check service. If you don’t fancy dragging your heavy coat or jacket away to the Caribbean with you but will need it immediately upon your return, simply leave it at the Valet and Away booth for a small charge. It is located on the Arrivals level by the escalators. If you require any further information, you can call the booth direct on +1 204-774-5897.

There is a maximum vehicle height for the Parkade

The maximum vehicle height when using the Parkade is 7.2 feet (2.2 meters). Please keep this in mind when booking your parking to avoid getting caught without a suitable parking space before your flight.
